Where is the Kokoda Track?
Papua New Guinea's Historic WWII Trail
The Kokoda Track winds through the rugged Owen Stanley Range, located in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The historic track stretches from Owers' Corner in Central Province to the village of Kokoda in Oro Province, traversing in a north-south direction through dense jungle and very challenging terrain.
The Kokoda Trail passes through the land of 2 main groups, Orokaiva and Koiari people. Most of our porter team live along the track and belong to the Koiari people. The track predominantly passes through Koiari land, and the eco-tourism brought by trekkers is warmly welcomed.
Steeped in World War II history, the Kokoda Track was the site of intense fighting between Australian and Japanese forces in 1942. Today, it serves as a pilgrimage site for those seeking to honour the sacrifices made during the war and test their own physical limits.

How Long Is The Kokoda Trail?
The Kokoda Track length is 96kms long connecting the southern and northern coasts of PNG and weaves through dense, challenging rainforest, passable only on foot. It begins at Owers Corner, approx. 61 km northeast of Port Moresby (Central Province), to Kokoda village (Oro Province).
It crosses steep mountains, dense rainforests, and numerous rivers. The track's elevation varies greatly, with the highest point being Mount Bellamy, rising to 2,490 meters above sea level. The path is often narrow and muddy, requiring careful navigation. Trekkers encounter varied landscapes, from jungle-covered slopes to open grasslands. River crossings are frequent, with some requiring rope bridges, rock crossings or slow and careful wading.
The Kokoda Trail passes through diverse ecosystems within the Owen Stanley Range. Lowland rainforests dominate the southern portions, gradually transitioning to montane forests at higher elevations.
Wildlife is abundant along the trail, including birds of paradise, tree kangaroos, and various reptile species. The area experiences high rainfall, contributing to lush vegetation and numerous waterfalls.
Several villages dot the track, offering glimpses into local Papuan culture. These communities, primarily of the Koiari and Orokaiva peoples, have inhabited the region for generations. Although the Kokoda Track can be traversed in either direction, our traditional itinerary begins at Kokoda Village and ends at Owers Corner.

Day 1
Arrival Port Moresby
Welcome to Port Moresby (POM)! After clearing customs, our team will assist with exchanging your Australian Currency to PNG Kina. Transfer to your hotel to relax, enjoy dinner, and attend a briefing to finalise Kokoda preparations. POM is a developing region, offering a unique cultural shift as you settle into a slower pace for the night.
Day 2
Port Moresby - Deniki
Your adventure kicks off with a scenic 30-minute flight to Popondetta, followed by a 3-hour drive to {Kokoda Village}, crossing the impressive Kumusi River. Explore the war museum and {Kokoda battlefield} before meeting our expert team. After lunch, embark on a 3-hour trek to Deniki, where you'll camp in tents or guest houses under the stars.
Day 3
Deniki - Alola
Hike to Alola, with and stop at the Isurava Battlefield for lunch and reflection. The site honours the 1942 battle, where Private Bruce Kingsbury earned the Victoria Cross. The Isurava Memorial, with its granite pillars of Courage, Endurance, Mateship, and Sacrifice, stands above the valley. We then trek through the Abuari valley to Alola village.
Day 4
Alola - Templetons
Setting off at dawn, trekking through Alola as the sun rises over the valley. The Kokoda Track reveals breathtaking waterfalls and winding paths that guide us to the valley floor for a quick water break. After steady climbs, we reach Templeton's Crossing, surrounded by rich biodiversity and history, sharing stories with trekkers and porters.

Day 5
Templetons - Kagi
We begin with a vigorous ascent from Templeton's Crossing, climbing to Mt. Bellamy’s summit at 2,190 meters. If the fog clears, you'll enjoy stunning views of the Kokoda Gap. We then detour to Myola 1, a site rich in nature and history, before descending ridge lines to Kagi, where the village warmly awaits us.
Day 6
Sabbath - Rest Day
Honouring the Sabbath, we join our Kokoda porters in a village church service, experiencing their heartfelt devotion and angelic singing. The day in Kagi offers rich cultural exchanges, games with local children, or an excursion to a nearby Kokoda Trail natural wonder. Alternatively, use this restful day for personal reflection and recharging.
Day 7
Kagi - Menari
We say goodbye to Kagi and descend to the creek bed, followed by a tough climb to Efogi 1 and Efogi 2. Enjoy fresh local fruit before tackling a challenging ridge ascent. At Brigade Hill, we pause to honor the fallen from the Battle of Mission Ridge-Brigade Hill, enjoy lunch, before continuing to Menari for the night.
Day 8
Menari - Nauro
We start with a gentle warm-up through streams before facing the steep ascent out of Menari. Reaching the saddle feels like a victory. After a tricky descent, we pause at the Brown River for some river surfing. The Kokoda Trail biodiversity shines as we navigate wetlands, finally arriving at Nauro Village’s distinctive orange earth.

Day 9
Nauro - Wa-Ule Creek
The day begins with a steep ascent through diverse landscapes, from grasslands to the Maguli Range summit. Along the way, we encounter remnants of the Kokoda Campaign, including trenches and foxholes. After a careful descent to Ofi Creek for lunch, we continue, crossing rivers until reaching Wa-Ule Creek, where fireflies accompany our final Kokoda Trail dinner.
Day 10
Wa-Ule Creek - Owers Corner
Our Kokoda Trail adventure peaks on this final day. After multiple river crossings, we face the climb up Imita Ridge, pausing at its crest to reflect on its history. Descending through mud and the Golden Stairs, we reach the Goldie River before the final ascent. Passing through the Kokoda Track arches at Owers Corner, we celebrate our achievement with lunch, drinks, and shared stories.
Day 11
Forward Travel
After celebrating with your team, the next phase begins. Enjoy breakfast at the Holiday Inn before heading to the airport, or extend your stay in Port Moresby for extra leisure. People that have pre-arranged extensions, transfers will be organised according to your itinerary, ensuring a smooth transition to your next adventure.
Day 12
Travel Extensions
For those with extra time, consider these unique travel experiences: explore the Port Moresby Nature Park, indulge at Loloata Island Resort, or visit Tufi Resort, Kavieng, and Rabaul. Quick FAQs
How hard is it to walk the Kokoda Track?
There is no doubt about it, walking the Kokoda Track is difficult. If walking around the block is 1/10, you can expect the Kokoda Track to be a minimum of 7/10 and up to 10/10 in places. The good news is that normal everyday people do it, so its more than achievable, you simply need to commit the time and effort to reach your goal.
How long does it take to walk the Kokoda Track?
The traditional Kokoda Track itinerary will have you on the track for eight days. However, if you are feeling super fit you can take the fast Kokoda option and get through it in six days. Although the track can be completed quicker, most operators don't offer tours shorter than six days. The quicker you do the trail, the less you see, the less you experience and the risk of injury increases.
Best time of year to do the Kokoda Trail?
Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a wet and dry season similar to northern Australia. Therefore, the track is typically closed to tourists between December and mid April which is considered the wet season. ANZAC Day (April) is a popular time with many tours booked out with the track, camp areas and key battle sites being very busy. If you want to be part of an ANZAC experience in a remote location then an ANZAC Day tour might be for you. Beyond that, anytime throughout the trekking season is the best time to do the Kokoda Track. You can experience rain and mud at anytime, so it really comes down to your availibility. Obviously airfares are generally a little cheaper outside of school holidays if you are trying to save a few dollars.

Can you do Kokoda without a guide?
Trekking the Kokoda Track must be undertaken with a licensed tour operator for a range of reasons. The Kokoda Track Authority (KTA) does not encourage trekkers to walk without a tour operator because: the track can vary and be unclear at times, it is not safe for an individual to be travelling solo and a solo traveller brings very little benefit to the local communities.
Who won the battle of Kokoda?
After speaking with many veterans the fought in PNG and veterans that have fought in modern conflicts, the common response to this question is, there are no winners in war. In terms of the battle for Kokoda itself, there were multiple engagements between the Australians and the Japanese whereby the Japanese took the ground and the Australians took back the ground. Ultimately the Japanese were ordered 'advance to the rear' retreating back towards the PNG coastline.
What happened at the Kokoda Track in WW2?
A very difficult question to sum up in just a few sentences because so much happened on the Kokoda Track its unlikely we will ever understand and capture everything the happened. In short, the Kokoda Track marks the location of one of the most important and understated battles during the Second World War and undoubtedly in Australian military history. Australian soldiers fought back and advancing Japanese force in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and pushed them back across the PNG mountains. Where did the Kokoda Track start and end?
To be specific, the Kokoda Track begins at Owers Corner which is the bottom or the southern side of the Track. It spans a length of 96kms traversing the beautiful PNG landscape and finishes at the northern end, slightly before Kokoda Village at a place called Kokoda Station.
